History Surrounds Sony Ebook Reader0

Sony recently announced plans to move their ebook division from Japan to San Diego, California in response to what they see as a burgeoning U.S. market. Sony has been in the ebook reader business for decades now, if anyone remembers years ago the CD-driven Sony Bookman.

Depth and experience in ebooks are welcome additions, welcome (once again) to the U.S. market Sony.

Very simple to use, being marketed as “The biggest revolution since the printed page,” you can try it in many Borders stores, though you may need to ask where the Sony kiosk is – sometimes its in the front, sometimes the back of the store.

Calling it the Reader Digital Book, the Sony device needs to be attached to a computer to download books. Holding at least 160 books without any additional memory needed, you can turn the pages 7,500 times before needing to recharge the device. Now that’s an interesting number, it seems to correlate to about 2 weeks of reading.

Weighing in at 9 ounces, about 16,000 books are available from the integrated Sony bookstore. But with the broad range of open formats supported, from PDF to Word and other book formats such as EPUB, thousands more books are certainly instantly available to the Sony Reader Digital Book user.

The most recent model of the Sony Reader is the PRS-700, which adds additional features such as a touch screen, more elegant user interface, and side lighting for reading in low light.
